Suqian Fm
Type Locality and Naming
It is derived from the “Suqian Bed” used by the Huaiyin Geologic Team of Jiangsu Geology Bureau in 1958 in its unpublished manuscript. However, they unassigned its type section. Bureau of Geology and Mineral Resources of Jiangsu Province (BGMRJ(Jiangsu)P) (1997) redefined the lithology of this formation and assigned a lectostratotype section, which is located at Wangyu (E118°20′, N34°09′), Xinyi City, Jiangsu Province.
Lithology and Thickness
The Suqian Fm is characterized by a series of greyish-white and greyish-green medium to coarse sands, greyish-green and brownish-yellow clays and mild clays containing gravels, and greyish-yellowish and brownish-yellow silts and fine sands, partially containing basalts. It contains mammalian and sporopollen fossils. Its thickness is in range of 13 to 120 m.
Relationships and Distribution
Lower contact
In the type section, the Suqian Fm unconformably contacts with the underlying Cretaceous Wangshi Gr. Regionally, the next older unit is the Yanchen Fm of Neogene.
Upper contact
In the type section, the Suqian Fm unconformably contacts with the overlying Pleistocene Douchong Fm.
Regional extent
This formation is distributed to Xinyi-Suqian-Sihong area, and can be seen in the bore cores from Fengpei and Sihong, Jiangsu Province.
